Gloria DeLauter is Seth's drug-addicted biological mother and the recurring antagonist of Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay Saga.
Overview
A neglectful, manipulative figure, Gloria essentially sold her son Seth to Ray Quinn for money before the series begins, and spends the next several books resurfacing periodically to extort the Quinn family and threaten the stability she's never been willing to provide herself.
Background
Little is given of Gloria's own history beyond her addiction and pattern of exploiting those closest to her — including her own sister, Sybill Griffin, whom she repeatedly lied to and extorted for money supposedly meant to help reclaim Seth. Her neglect and abuse of Seth as a young child caused the deep wariness and fear of physical contact he carries into the Quinn household.
Personality
Gloria is manipulative, self-interested, and willing to exploit anyone — her son, her sister, the Quinns — for money. Her reappearances across the series are consistently framed as threats to the stability the Quinns have built for Seth.
Story Arc
Sea Swept
Gloria's neglect and exploitation of Seth precede the novel; her absence and unreliability are what allow Ray Quinn to take the boy in, and the question of whether she'll resurface to reclaim him (for a price) looms over the custody fight at the heart of the book.
Rising Tides
Gloria remains a lingering threat to the Quinn family's stability as the brothers work to secure Seth's place permanently.
Inner Harbor
Gloria's manipulation of her sister Sybill — convincing her the Quinns "stole" Seth — drives much of the novel's central conflict, until Sybill sees through her sister's lies and sides with the Quinns.
Chesapeake Blue
Gloria resurfaces one final time, still determined to extract money from Seth and the family, providing the saga's last antagonistic threat before the story's resolution.
Relationships
Seth Quinn
Gloria's neglect and exploitation of Seth as a young child are the root of his early wariness and distrust; her periodic reappearances throughout the series threaten the security he's built with the Quinns.
Sybill Griffin
Gloria's sister, repeatedly lied to and used for money under the pretense of caring about Seth's welfare.
