Ray Quinn (also called Raymond) is the late patriarch of the Quinn family in Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay Saga. Though he dies in the opening pages of Sea Swept, his deathbed promise to his three adopted sons sets the entire series in motion, and his presence — and ghost — continues to guide his sons throughout the saga.

Overview

A big, warm-hearted English professor with a passion for the Chesapeake Bay and wooden boats, Ray spent his life rescuing troubled boys and giving them a stable, loving home. His final act — taking in one more "stray," Seth, just before his fatal car accident — and his dying request that his three grown sons keep Seth as a Quinn, drives the emotional and plot engine of all four novels.

Background

Over the years, Ray and his wife Stella adopted three boys — Cameron, Ethan, and Phillip — each rescued from abusive or neglectful homes. After Stella's death, Ray took in a fourth boy, Seth DeLauter, shortly before his own death in a car accident whose cause — genuine accident or a possible response to blackmail over Seth's parentage — remains a mystery investigated across the first three books. It is eventually revealed that Seth is not, as long suspected, Ray's illegitimate biological son, but his grandson — the child of a daughter Ray conceived before marrying Stella and never knew existed.

Personality

Described as a big man — 6'5", blond-haired, blue-eyed — with more than enough heart to take in three half-grown boys "drowning in a sea of violence." Ray's love for his sons was unconditional and transformative, and even after his death his voice and wisdom continue to guide each brother at a critical moment in his own story.

Story Arc

Sea Swept

Ray dies of injuries from a car accident at the start of the novel, after extracting a promise from his three adopted sons to care for Seth, the boy he'd recently taken in. Suspicion lingers over whether the crash was accidental or intentional.

Rising Tides, Inner Harbor, and Chesapeake Blue

Though deceased, Ray appears to each of his sons in turn — Cam, Ethan, Phillip, and eventually Seth — offering guidance at pivotal moments in their respective love stories, a recurring device that ties the four novels together.

Relationships

Stella Quinn

Ray's wife and partner in rescuing and raising troubled boys; her death predates the start of the series.

Cameron, Ethan, Phillip, and Seth Quinn

Ray's four adopted sons, each given a second chance and a stable home after surviving abuse or neglect. His deathbed promise regarding Seth is the inciting event of the entire saga.

Physical Description

Ray stood 6 feet 5 inches tall, with blond hair and blue eyes.
