Alex Stanislaski is a character in Nora Roberts' The Stanislaskis. The younger of the two Stanislaski brothers, he is a tough, street-smart NYPD detective, and the hero of Convincing Alex, the fourth book in the series.

Overview

Alex is rugged, dedicated, and instinctively suspicious — qualities that serve him well as a detective and badly when an unconventional, irrepressible soap-opera writer decides he's exactly the kind of "research" she needs for her show. His arc is a classic opposites-attract story, built on a wrong-footed first meeting that turns into the central relationship of his life.

Background

Alex is the younger of Yuri and Nadia's two sons, following his older brother Mikhail and preceding his younger sister Rachel in birth order, with his eldest sister Natasha ahead of them both. He chose police work over his brother's trade, drawn to the structure, danger, and clear lines of right and wrong that the job offered a kid from a family that had fled real, unambiguous danger back in the Ukraine.

As a boy, Alex and Mikhail were known for roughhousing and getting into trouble together; as an adult, Alex carries himself with a cop's watchful, assessing eye, even off duty.

Personality

Alex is tough, guarded, and direct, with a strong sense of right and wrong shaped by years on the force. He has a dry sense of humor and a low tolerance for nonsense, both of which are tested — and ultimately won over — by Bess McNee's irreverent, unstoppable energy. Underneath the hard exterior is real warmth, especially toward family.

Story Arc

Convincing Alex

Alex's book. He mistakenly arrests soap-opera writer Bess McNee for soliciting while she's doing "research" for her show, setting off a courtship neither of them sees coming. Bess, delighted by the real-life material, starts following Alex around for ideas — and Alex, despite himself, finds he can't shake her, or stop wanting her around. His arc is about letting down his guard enough to be convinced — hence the title — that an unconventional, persistent woman might be exactly what he needs.

Later Books

By Considering Kate, Alex and Bess are married with a daughter, Carmen, and Alex appears at family gatherings arguing amiably with his brother Mikhail about home renovations, a sign of the comfortable domestic life he's built since his own book.
