In Death Series is an ongoing futuristic romantic-suspense and police-procedural book series by Nora Roberts, writing under the pen name J.D. Robb. The series follows New York homicide detective Eve Dallas as she investigates murders in the mid-twenty-first century while building a life with her husband, Roarke.
Overview
The series begins in New York City in 2058. Its central character, Lieutenant Eve Dallas, is a homicide detective with the New York Police and Security Department. A determined and highly skilled investigator, Eve is driven by a strong belief in justice for the dead. Her dedication to her work is shaped in part by the abuse and violence she survived as a child.
In Naked in Death, Eve meets Roarke, an Irish-born businessman and billionaire who initially becomes a suspect in one of her investigations. Their developing relationship forms the principal romantic storyline of the series. They marry between Immortal in Death and Rapture in Death, after which the novels follow both their marriage and Eve's continuing homicide investigations.
Although most installments contain a self-contained murder case, the series has a continuing chronology. Relationships, promotions, marriages, births, professional changes, and the consequences of earlier cases carry forward from one book to the next. Eve's circle gradually expands to include fellow police officers, medical professionals, artists, reporters, business associates, and survivors encountered through her investigations.
The novels combine police procedural, mystery, suspense, romance, humor, and speculative fiction. The futuristic setting includes advanced communications, artificial intelligence, interplanetary travel, legalized prostitution, reconstructed food, and other technological or social changes. Despite these elements, the series remains primarily focused on homicide investigations and character relationships rather than on scientific or technological speculation.

Setting
- The series is set primarily in New York City during the middle decades of the twenty-first century, beginning in 2058.
- Eve works for the New York Police and Security Department, usually abbreviated as the NYPSD.
- The world is still recovering from the Urban Wars, a period of international conflict that reshaped governments, law enforcement, food production, and social institutions.
- Handguns are heavily restricted, prostitution has been legalized and regulated, and many familiar foods have been replaced by soy-based or laboratory-produced substitutes.
- Common technologies include domestic robots, droids, advanced medical treatments, air and off-planet travel, holograms, AutoChefs, computerized vehicles, and sophisticated communications and surveillance systems.
- Although cases occasionally take Eve outside New York or off-planet, Manhattan remains the principal setting.
Central Family

The central family is formed by Eve Dallas and Roarke. Neither begins the series with a conventional family structure, and both carry lasting trauma from abusive childhoods. Their marriage becomes the emotional center of the series.
Over time, Eve and Roarke create an extended chosen family that includes Summerset, Mavis Freestone, Leonardo, Bella Eve, Delia Peabody, Ian McNab, Dr. Charlotte Mira, Dennis Mira, Nadine Furst, Feeney, and other friends and colleagues.

Series Summary
Lieutenant Eve Dallas serves as a homicide detective in a technologically advanced but socially imperfect New York City. Each installment places Eve at the center of a murder investigation, ranging from crimes of passion and domestic violence to serial murder, organized crime, terrorism, political corruption, and technologically assisted killing.
Eve approaches each victim as someone whose life and identity must be recovered from the circumstances of death. She frequently states or demonstrates that she “stands for the dead,” and her determination to identify killers often places her in physical or emotional danger. Her investigations rely on forensic evidence, interviews, psychological insight, police procedure, teamwork, and her ability to provoke suspects into revealing themselves.
Running alongside the investigations is Eve's personal development. At the beginning of the series, she is emotionally isolated and reluctant to trust others. Her relationship with Roarke forces both characters to confront their histories, fears, and differing views of justice. Their marriage develops without replacing Eve's professional identity or Roarke's complicated relationship with wealth, power, and his criminal past.
The supporting cast also develops across the series. Delia Peabody progresses from Eve's aide to her detective partner; Ian McNab becomes both a frequent investigative collaborator and Peabody's romantic partner; Mavis Freestone builds a musical career and a family with Leonardo; and Eve's relationships with mentors such as Feeney and Dr. Charlotte Mira deepen. These continuing relationships give the series a cumulative family narrative in addition to its individual mysteries.
